Event Description

Ziloka has the honor to welcome M. Max Diakok to London for a Gwoka Workshop exploring the 'Wonn a Léwòz'!

As it is called in Guadeloupe, the 'Wonn a Léwòz' can be translated to mean the 'circle of Léwòz' ; 'Léwòz' being popular evenings where participants and the public gather to form a circle combining responsorial singing in Guadeloupean Creole, rhythms played on the Ka drums and dancing.

As dancers and soloists enter the circle in turn and perform facing the drums the 'Wonn a Léwòz' is also a moment of self expression and improvisation.

During this workshop, Max will share his amazing experience and unique style to teach us the codes to enter the circle with confidence; how to dance and use our body depending on the rhythm played; and share with us expressive embodied vocabulary to improvise with our own style!

So whether you are an occasional dancer or a more experienced one, this workshop will bring new content and vocabulary to your improvisation skills and style.

- About Max Diakok -

Based in Paris, Max is a choreographer and performer. In 1978, he discovered traditional dance, full of embodied codes, in the world of Léwòz evenings practiced in the rural areas of Guadeloupe. Initiated by immersion, and guided by Ka-Masters he began to express himself in the circles and a few years later continued his quest with modern Gwoka groups as a soloist.

From 1989, he continued his apprenticeship by studying Modern-Jazz and Modern-Ka dance with Léna Blou,Classical dance with Simone Texeraud in Guadeloupe and Contemporary dance in France. He carried on to Guinea to follow the teachings of the troupe "Wonders of Guinea" and Master Mamady Kourouma. In his quest to acquire new gestural and other technical tools, he devotes himself primarily to Contemporary dance, African dance and body techniques such as yoga, buto and lap-dance, while continuing to draw on his Gwoka gestural vocabulary.

Max has worked with many choreographers, dance companies and theatre directors (Paolo CAMPOS, Germaine ACOGNY, Jean François DUROURE, CARPE DIEM, AXIS PROJECT), and had made various appearances on French television's entertainment shows.
